Training Requests
If this is your first time using IMSERC, you must, first complete IMSERC Onbaording for account setup. If this has not been done or you are uncertain, please go to IMSERC Onboarding Webpage .
To request training on specific IMSERC instruments and techniques, please use the below IMSERC Subject Area links and text sections as a guide.
- General Information
- Crystallography (CRY)
- Mass Spectrometry (MS)
- Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy
- Physical Characterization of Materials (PCM) and Optical
General Training Information
Before you can be trained on instrumentation at IMSERC, please make sure you have visited IMSERC Onboarding and completed all steps listed on the page. This will ensure your username and affiliation is set up in IMSERC, and IMSERC staff will be able to give you access to reserve instrumentation after your training, as well as provide you access to your data remotely.
New users should have samples ready for analysis when requesting training. Most instruments have training sessions once a week. Users will typically receive limited access after the first training session. For example, mass spectrometry users will receive specific instrument access only and NMR users will receive access for a limited number of instruments/experiments. After new users have 5-10 hours of experimenting, users are expected to schedule a followup session where details related to individual, specfici or advanced experiments can be covered. At this point, additional access to equipment is granted.
Crystallography (CRY) Training
Hands-on training on the single crystal diffractometers is typically performed after students have completed the Chem432 crystallography class, which is taught in the winter quarter. The Chem432 requirement might be waived for students and visiting scholars that have prior experience with single crystal diffraction techniques.
Training on the powder diffractometers does not require completion of the Chem432 class but taking the class is recommended for users without experience on powder diffraction. Please request training by submitting an IMSERC Crystallography (CRY) Training Request Form and feel free to contact a CRY staff member for any questions ahead of training.
As a new user, before you can be trained on instrumentation at IMSERC, please make sure you have visited IMSERC Onboarding and completed all steps listed on the page. This will ensure your username and affiliation is set up in IMSERC, and IMSERC staff will be able to give you access to reserve instrumentation after your training, as well as provide you access to your data remotely. Additionally, for Crystallography work as independent user, you need the 'X-ray Safety' certificate which you can take online at myHR Learn.
Mass Spectrometry (MS) Training
When submitting your training request for MS instrumenation in IMSERC, keep in mind, training is performed on a per sample basis. When filling out your request, please choose only ONE instrument which you believe is the best fit for your sample(s). Any additional instrumentation will require a separate submission.
Use the IMSERC Mass Spectrometry (MS) Training Request Form to submit your instrument training request and feel free to contact an MS staff member for any questions ahead of training.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy Training
When submitting your training request for access to NMR instrumentation, keep in mind, training is performed on a per sample basis, you will want to have a sample ready for analysis. NMR training is performed in two stages: (1) a basic NMR session and (2) follow-up advanced training wehre any additional instrumentation will require a separate submission. All users must complete basic NMR training to gain access to IMSERC NMRs and subsequent advanced training.
To request basic NMR training, please use the IMSERC Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Training Request Form to submit your instrument training request and feel free to contact an NMR staff member for any questions ahead of training.
Complete information and supplementary material necesarry to answer the comprehension check questions part of the IMSERC NMR Training Request form can be found on our NMR-specific Training Page to submit your instrument training request and feel free to contact an NMR staff .
